   1 # Joining SIPB

   3 We are MIT's volunteer student computing group, improving computing at
   4 MIT since 1969.  Today, SIPB projects provide innovative services and
   5 special expertise to the MIT community.  We have an office just
   6 outside the Athena cluster in the student center W20, and you are
   7 welcome to come by to ask us for help or to hang around and use our
   8 computers.

  10 ## Membership

  12 If you are interested in contributing to SIPB's computing services and
  13 in helping users with unusual computing questions, consider becoming a
  14 member.  Full membership in SIPB is granted after sustained
  15 contribution to the organization, and confers several benefits:
  16 <ul>
  17 <li> A permanent Athena account. </li>
  18 <li> A key to the SIPB office in W20, and a storage drawer in the SIPB office.</li>
  19 <li> A vote at SIPB meetings and (for current students) elections.</li>
  20 </ul>
  21 Prospective members interested in becoming full members should attend
  22 our weekly meetings regularly, participate in SIPB activities like
  23 hackathons, [cluedumps](http://cluedumps.mit.edu/), and [IAP classes](http://sipb.mit.edu/iap),
  24 and either create a new SIPB
  25 project or help with some existing SIPB projects.  This process
  26 generally takes about a term of active participation.

  28 ## The office

  30 Prospective members are encouraged to hang out in the SIPB office
  31 anytime it is open, which it is on a typical weekday afternoon and
  32 evening.  We strive to make it a fun and comfortable place to work on
  33 projects, homework, or anything else by providing an array of amenities:
  34 <ul>
  35 <li> Nice chairs, big monitors, many computers, table space for laptops</li>
  36 <li> Music: ours (CDs or [LAMP](https://lamp.mit.edu/)) or yours (via AirTunes or a certain "printer")</li>
  37 <li> Tons of equipment and supplies from video adapters to an oscilloscope to Band-Aids</li>
  38 <li> A diverse technical library, including popular textbooks</li>
  39 <li> Soda and snacks for late-night sessions, cheaper and closer than Verde's</li>
